IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz addressed the enduring value of academic libraries in his September 2011 comments:
"A library is the heart of the academic community. It is a place where librarians and archivists preserve, organize, and disseminate knowledge. Increasingly, it is a place without walls."
Librarians today have a special duty for stewardship, for taking care of the special materials that are created by faculty and students as part of their academic lives. The Chancellor noted that, "as the role of books in life and learning continues to change, libraries like IUPUI's are focusing more and more on preserving and creating access to collections of rare and unique materials."
